We are delighted to announce that the 2019 Spring concert in Louth will be a staged performance of Sir Lennox Berkeley’s one-act comic opera A Dinner Engagement. Stage direction will be by Chris Cann and musical direction by Alex Carpenter. The production will take place at our home-from-home, the Riverhead Theatre in Louth, Lincolnshire.

First performed in 1954, the opera tells the hilarious story of the impoverished Earl and Countess of Dunmow who are preparing a dinner party to entertain the formidable Grand Duchess of Monteblanco. Having no staff except their loyal but eccentric char-lady, Mrs Kneebone, they are compelled to cook the meal themselves – and keep up appearances while they’re at it! This witty comedy of manners sparkles like the finest vintage champagne.

The second half of the programme will consist of a concert of Gilbert and Sullivan favourites to charm and delight the audience, featuring songs from HMS Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance and The Gondoliers, and includes a preview of the June production of The Mikado.
